Peter Bush in conversation with Mara Faye Lethem

Joan Sales’ Uncertain Glory is considered one of the most relevant novels in twentieth-century Catalan literature. Edited by MacLehose Press in 2014, The Economist deemed it one of the ten best books of fiction published in English in 2014. Now, the cult classics press New York Review of Books is publishing it once again. In celebration of this new English translation of the Catalan masterpiece, Peter Bush will discuss the unique process of translating this classic story set during the Spanish Civil War with fellow translator Mara Faye Lethem.

PETER BUSH is an award-winning literary translator of Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan from the UK. A former director of the British Centre for Literary Translation, Bush became a professor of Literary Translation at Middlesex University and later the University of East Anglia. He is the translator of a number of books including Ramón del Valle-Inclan’s Tyrant Banderas (for NYRB Classics), Celestina by Fernando de Rojas , Teresa Solana’s Crazy Tales of Blood and Guts, Mercè Rodoreda’s In Diamond Square, Najat El Hachmi’s The Body Hunter, and Leonardo Padura’s Inspector Mario Conde novels. His translations of two Catalan classics by Josep Pla, The Gray Notebook and The Bitter Life. were published in 2014.

MARA FAYE LETHEM has translated novels from Catalan by Jaume Cabré, Albert Sánchez Piñol, Marc Pastor, Toni Sala, and Alicia Kopf, among others. Her translation of The Whispering City, by Sara Moliner, recently received an English PEN Award and two of her translations were nominated for the 2016 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. She writes the New Catalan Fiction catalogue for the Institut Ramon Llull, and redacted the application that earned Barcelona designation as a UNESCO City of Literature.
