Following the success of the inaugural Warwick Translates in 2019, we are delighted to announce that the summer school will be returning in 2020. For a review of Warwick Translates 2019 by two of our participants, see this report from the ITI Bulletin and browse through our feedback.

Warwick Translates is the first literary translation summer school to be held at the University of Warwick. It offers the opportunity to translate texts across the literary genres into English, working with leading professional translators. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 20 students to allow for individual attention, and places will be allocated on a strictly “first-come-first-served” basis.

The course will be taught in an all-day workshop environment using a variety of texts including non-fiction (essays, journalism, academic) and fiction (poetry, fantasy, children’s literature and crime writing etc.). There will be plenty of opportunities for networking with publishers, agents, Warwick staff and one another. Lunch time and evening events will be organised: more details to follow soon.

Attendees can choose to work in one language or to split their time between two languages by attending morning workshops in one language and afternoon workshops in the other language. To see timings of workshops and events download the programme (coming soon).

Cost

The fee will be announced in January 2020 and registration will be opened shortly afterwards. This year we will be offering a residential package (includes tuition, breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments, dinner, and campus accommodation) and a non-residential package (includes tuition, lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments).

Please refer to the accommodation page for details of suitable reasonably priced accommodation nearby. See here to register (registration opening soon).

Eligibility

There are no formal entry requirements to take part in the course, except the language requirement detailed below.

English Requirements

As the workshops are all into English, it is essential that all applicants to the course are English mother-tongue level.

Non-native English speakers will be sent a short passage to translate before their place at Warwick Translates is confirmed. We reserve the right to issue a refund to anyone who does not meet the English-language requirements of the summer school.

Please email smlc.summer.school@nullwarwick.ac.uk to request this passage, specifying what language workshop(s) you would like to attend.
